The Apollo has a GREAT lineup of horror movies for this fall and winter. I’m slick in my pants with terror just thinking about the things I just saw, and I want YOU to feel this way too. So here are the movies they're showing. Bring a date or your least favorite friend, and enjoy the show!
Twinkie Terror (2020) dir. Chödi Balszak
psychological horror ⚈ romance ⚈ gore
Two college sophomores hook up at a party and during the night both of them lose their ears somehow. The morning after, they are both extremely hungover, trying to do work in the library, when the vape they are sharing dies. Everyone suddenly seems to be looking at them funny, and they can’t hear what they’re saying. To combat the oral fixation and stress they start chowing down on gluten free twinkies…a mistake. While they are running back and forth from the communal bathroom and avoiding eye contact with each other and everyone else, the ghosts of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville West turn up to torment them.
Ham Stirred in the Afternoon (1992) dir. Quentin Tarantino
classic horror ⚈ experimental ⚈ extreme gore
Two professors begin a sexual relationship. To spice things up, they learn about this thing called “hamstering”, where a declawed hamster is shoved up one's butt for pleasure. But the whole film is shot from the POV of the hamster, who feels like a dejected third wheel and is also afraid of the dark. So when Spork, the hamster, finds a magic little sword, he takes his revenge.
*note: this film is notably dated and based on homophobic myths and legends
Sh[m]arty Pants (2025) dir. Clemmy Diah
psychological horror ⚈ paranormal
Rumpa always was a big reader, and as such she was always a great writer. Her friends used to come to her to correct their grammar mistakes in essays– now they just use Chat GPT. When Rumpa herself gets accused of using Chat GPT by a professor, her world is turned upside down. She wonders: Is the use of em dashes and semicolons reserved for Chat GPT only? Is everyone a fucking idiot? Her anxieties are multiplied when she becomes possessed by a demon named Tutsi who makes her shit her pants uncontrollably whenever she hears the phrase… “Chat”.
Barefoot (1985) dir. Jerkaff Gierchoff
classic horror ⚈ cult horror ⚈ slasher
A sweet communal living and dining space in a quaint little town takes a sharp turn when a girl, Skaka, joins and notices strange happenings. A circle drawn on the floor with ethically sourced Himalayan black salt? Mysterious midnight chanting invoking a god of lentils? Sacrificial blocks of tofu? And why is everyone always naked? Skaka sets out on a perilous journey to uncover terrifying hidden truths.
Monsters Walk Among Us (2022) dir. Toneil Phunguss
supernatural horror ⚈ slasher
Atung is a boy. He goes to the local bar one night, the only one in his small town, and when buying his fourth drink, accidentally hands his real ID to the bartender instead of his fake one. Uh oh. He is thrown out, goes on a rant to some random classmates about reverse sexism, then walks home to his dorm. He orders Chipotle on uber eats, but when it arrives, they skimped on cheese and guac. He falls asleep with revenge in his heart, and the final straw is when he is woken up at 5am by a lawnmower outside his window. He succumbs to neo-liberal ideologies and calls on Satan to help him kill everyone.
